No. 75 of 84 in the list
Las Damas
Las Damas stands in the front row on Levante beach, next to the Edificio Copablanca and the Torre Yago. 85 metres, 28 floors – but whether the building dates from 1964 or 1975, the sources disagree.
The story
The address is Avenida Madrid 15, the Levante beach promenade. Guests report that the sand is only a few metres from the door. Behind the building is a pool; there is parking, a lift and a reception for holiday lets. Some of the apartments are let to holidaymakers through portals; the rest is a private residential complex.
Two dates
The Spanish Wikipedia list of tallest buildings gives Las Damas a construction year of 1964, based on the old Emporis database. The architect Iker Gil, in his photo essay for MAS Context, dates the building to 1975 instead and names J. L. Candela and Fernando Pérez Segura as architects. 1964 would be before the completion of the Torre Coblanca (1966), the city’s first skyscraper – a 28-storey tower that early would be remarkable. 1975 fits the height better. Which figure is right could not be resolved.
The essay describes the type to which Las Damas belongs: balconies and living rooms facing the sea, corridors, stairs and lifts at the back. These towers were made possible by the Plan General of 1956 under Mayor Pedro Zaragoza, whose 1963 revision freed up growth upwards. Nothing more is documented about Las Damas: no developer, no contractor, no number of apartments.
