Coblanca 37
Coblanca 37 stands on Avenida del Murtal, in the middle of a small cluster of Coblanca towers at the western end of Poniente beach. Little is known about the building itself – all the more about the name.
The story
According to the database SkyDB the high-rise was completed in 2001. It has 25 floors and measures 86 metres. It is used as a residential building. No independent source names an architect or developer. Another directory (rascacielos.be) lists the tower at 83 metres and 24 floors – small discrepancies of the kind found between sources for almost all Benidorm towers.
A Coblanca quarter
Coblanca 37 does not stand alone. Next door on Avenida de la Marina Baixa rises Coblanca 32 B (81 metres), a few steps further the twin towers of Coblanca 40 (89 metres, 2002). Opposite, on Avenida Vila Joiosa, the Torrevieja developers TM later built their Sunset Drive. So between 1997 and 2018 a dense high-rise quarter grew up on the western edge of Benidorm.
Where the name comes from
The ‘Coblanca’ number series began in 1966 with the Torre Coblanca on Avenida Bilbao, the city’s first true skyscraper. Behind the name to this day is a group of companies belonging to the Benidorm building contractor Isidro Bononat de Nalda. According to Valencia Plaza it has put up around 50 buildings in the region as the ‘Coblanca International Group’; many of its companies are based on Avenida Bilbao. Whether Coblanca 37 comes directly from this group is not documented – the name suggests it.
