No city in the world has as many skyscrapers per inhabitant as Benidorm. Behind every tower lies a story: bankruptcies and records, developers with vision and developers without money, court rulings and a lift that had supposedly been forgotten.
The skyline above is drawn from real data: 76 buildings of 80 m or more, to scale, from west to east. Tap a tower to see its story or its data.
A city that grew upwards
In 1950 Benidorm had around 2,800 inhabitants, most of them living from fishing. Today it has more than 77,000, and in summer the town is several times as full. Benidorm made room for its visitors not by spreading out but by building up: a development plan from 1956 and its amendment in 1963 allowed slim, very tall towers on small plots, surrounded by open space.
According to Wikipedia, the city now has 33 buildings over 100 metres, more than Madrid. Four of them are taller than 150 metres. Measured by area, according to Spanish Wikipedia, only New York has more skyscrapers. And the next record is already rising: at 230 metres, the TM Tower is set to become Europe’s tallest residential building in 2028.
