Playa Azul
Playa Azul is a 105-metre residential tower from 2002 on Calle Zamora in Rincón de Loix. Its striking feature is a profile stepped on one side only, in shades of green and red.
The story
Playa Azul was built between 2000 and 2002, with 34 floors and four lifts, as an all-concrete structure. According to the city’s skyscraper brochure of 2011 the design is by an architect named J. A. Valles. On completion the tower was one of the tallest residential buildings in the city; CTBUH today ranks it 18th in Benidorm and 54th in Spain.
Steps on one side only
Many stepped high-rises taper upwards like a pyramid. Playa Azul does it differently: as it rises, the building steps back on one side only, while the other side stays straight. Add to that a façade in greenish and reddish tones. This combination makes the tower easy to recognise in densely built Rincón de Loix, even though it is not among the very tallest.
Nothing public is documented about the developer, contractor and number of apartments, and no press reports on the construction could be found. Today individual apartments are offered as holiday lets; one of them advertises its position on the 28th floor.
