Sandos Benidorm Suites
For around 25 years the high-rise at Calle Marbella 2 was called Flamingo Benidorm, latterly as the Marconfort Flamingo. Today it is an all-inclusive hotel with 200 suites whose theme is the music of the 70s, 80s and 90s.
The story
According to the skyscraper database Emporis, the building went up in 1989 as the aparthotel ‘Flamingo Benidorm’. It measures 83 metres and has 25 or 26 floors, depending on the source. It stands not by the water but around 700 metres inland from Levante beach, in the district behind Avenida de Europa. British package holidaymakers remember online a Thomson sign on the roof – that is not documented.
The 2014 conversion
In October 2013 the Benidorm-based chain Marconfort announced the conversion: the Flamingo became the ‘Marconfort Benidorm Suites’, according to Hosteltur ‘200 suites in a building of 25 floors’. It was the chain’s first all-inclusive hotel consisting only of suites, and its first themed hotel: bars, restaurants and entertainment revolve around the music of the 70s, 80s and 90s. The units were finished in mid-2014.
Sandos since 2017
On 1 November 2017 the hotel switched to the partner brand Sandos, which also runs resorts in Mexico, and has since been called Sandos Benidorm Suites. The communal areas were redecorated in autumn 2017; the staff stayed. Today there is a buffet restaurant with show cooking, an Indian à la carte restaurant, the ‘Rolling's Bar’ with music from the three decades and a panoramic lift to the restaurant. The hotel is family-friendly; only one lounge is reserved for adults.
