Torre Coblanca
Torre Coblanca is regarded as Benidorm’s first skyscraper. From the 1960s until 1985 it was the city’s tallest building.

The story
In 1963 Benidorm lifted the height limit for new buildings. One of the first to take advantage was the Catalan architect Juan Guardiola Gaya. He stacked a single, well-designed floor plan on top of itself again and again until the desired height was reached – in his own words, just like the early skyscrapers in Chicago. It was built from 1963 to 1966.
The result became the template for the apartment towers that lined the coast in the 1960s and 70s. Guardiola himself designed more than 30 high-rises in Benidorm, including Coblanca 5 and Torre Benidorm. Torre Coblanca is listed in Docomomo Ibérico’s register of modern architecture.
Good to know
- Whether it really was the first skyscraper is disputed: one architectural historian points to the 15-storey Edificio Frontalmar of 1963–64, which at the time was three times as tall as its neighbours.
- Four apartments per floor, with cross-ventilation in the corner apartments.
Open questions
- The year of construction and number of floors vary from source to source (1963–1969, 27–31 floors).
